He always believed that Cubism was the single most important development in 20th century art. He did several “cubist” sketches of his wife, Lydia. He started off with a fairly straightforward representational drawing, which he modified in a series of sketches to teach himself what the Cubists were doing. He did not sign these sketches because he was not a Cubist. This one bears a studio stamp and was done in about 1948. 198 199 201
